Queen Hur Memorial Park, Ayodhya

The proposed renovation and expansion of Queen Hur Memorial Park seeks to revitalize the existing memorial park located along the Sarayu River in Ayodhya and expand it into a waterfront park of approximately 600,250 sq ft by integrating the surrounding riverside landscape.

The proposal aims to preserve the symbolic significance of the existing memorial while introducing a renewed waterfront environment that connects the riverside scenery with public open space.

The design is guided by the concept “Human, Nature and Deity,” proposing a spatial framework that symbolically links people, nature, and the sacred realm. At the heart of the park, a Mandala space is introduced as a place representing harmony and exchange. This space forms the central element of the spatial composition, connecting Queen Hur’s tomb, the memorial monument, and the riverside ghat. Inspired by the traditional Indian stepwell, the Mandala is envisioned as a central gathering place where visitors can pause, reflect, and engage in cultural exchange.

A gently curving wall along the riverside draws inspiration from the flowing landscape forms of Korean royal tombs and the sculptural qualities of Indian stupas, integrating symbolic elements from both cultures into a unified landscape expression. Within this spatial framework, Queen Hur’s tomb is positioned as the symbolic focal point of the park, overlooking both the landscape and the Sarayu River while serving as a visual landmark visible from across the river.

The proposal also emphasizes continuity with the existing site conditions. Existing vegetation and natural topography are intended to be preserved wherever possible, while locally sourced materials are proposed to support a sustainable landscape strategy. Conceived as an open public park, the project aims to connect seamlessly with nearby religious and cultural areas, providing a shared space for cultural experience, reflection, and leisure for both local residents and visitors.
